With billions of dollars from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Inflation Reduction Act ready to spend, will building codes accelerate or slow adoption of distributed renewables and energy storage systems? Building codes and standards enhance the safety and overall quality of electrical systems in the built environment. The building code landscape is evolving rapidly to reflect our increasingly decarbonized economy, with efficiency, sustainability and electrification demands being placed on buildings and the technologies that manage them. However, a recent decision by the International Code Council Board of Directors could introduce a barrier to the inclusion of solar- and storage-ready homes, increasing retrofits costs to adopt distributed renewables and storage. This talk will cover the state of building codes in the Southeast and the implications of the recent ICC Board decision on the deployment of renewables and storage systems.
